What to Pack for Umrah: A Complete Packing Guide for Singapore Pilgrims
You've confirmed your booking, counted down the days, and now comes the part that stresses almost every pilgrim out: what exactly do I pack?
Don't worry, we've got you covered. This guide is written specifically for pilgrims travelling from Singapore, so you won't find advice about things that don't apply to you. Whether it's your first Umrah or your fifth, use this as your go-to checklist before you head to Changi.
Before You Start Packing: A Few Things to Know
Makkah and Madinah are hot and dry for most of the year, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C outdoors. Inside the Masjidil Haram and hotels, air-conditioning can make it feel surprisingly cold. You'll also be doing a lot of walking, Tawaf, Sa'i, and trips between the mosques add up quickly.
So your packing goal is simple: light, breathable, and practical. Pack what you need, leave behind what you don't.
1. Documents & Money, Pack These First
These go in your cabin bag, not your checked luggage. If your suitcase gets delayed, you still need these.
Passport (must have at least 6 months validity)
Umrah visa and flight e-tickets, printed AND saved on your phone
Hotel and transport vouchers
Travel insurance documents
Emergency contacts list (including your Emerald Travels guide's number)
Saudi Riyals (SAR) in small denominations for taxis and meals
Your debit/credit card for larger purchases
Tip: Photocopy your passport and visa, and email the scans to yourself. If anything gets lost, you'll thank yourself later.
2. Ihram & Clothing, Get This Right Before You Leave
For Men:
2 sets of ihram (unstitched white cloth), bring a spare in case one gets soiled
Lightweight, loose clothing for non-ihram days (thobes or light trousers)
A thin cardigan or light jacket for air-conditioned spaces and flights
Breathable socks and undergarments
Test your ihram at home before you go. Make sure you can move comfortably in it, the last thing you want is to figure out the fit when you're at the miqat.
For Women:
3–4 modest, loose abayas in breathable fabrics (cotton or linen blends work well)
Hijabs and inner caps, bring extras, they're lightweight
Comfortable, modest underclothes
A light shawl or cardigan for cold indoor areas
Note: For women, ihram is simply modest clothing, your everyday abaya is perfectly suitable. Choose light colours and breathable fabrics for comfort in the heat.
3. Footwear, Your Feet Will Thank You
You will walk kilometres every day. This is not the trip to bring new shoes you haven't broken in.
1 pair of comfortable walking sandals, essential for Tawaf and Sa'i. Men in ihram must leave the ankles uncovered.
1 pair of lightweight slip-on shoes for the hotel and flights
A small labelled shoe bag for leaving your footwear outside the mosque
Anti-blister plasters and toe separators, these are lifesavers
Where to buy in Singapore: Mustafa Centre (Little India) is a favourite for affordable, practical Umrah sandals. Sports stores at Bugis or Orchard work well too.
4. Prayer Essentials
Foldable, lightweight prayer mat, mosque floors are clean, but a personal mat is handy outdoors or in crowded areas
Small tasbih or digital counter (optional)
Pocket Quran or Quran app on your phone
A small pouch to store your essentials during prayers
5. Health, Hygiene & Comfort
This is where most people either overpack or forget something critical. Here's what actually matters:
Toiletries:
Unscented soap, shampoo, and deodorant, essential while in the state of ihram; scented products are not permitted
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Wet wipes and pocket tissues (you'll use these constantly)
Nail clippers and a small comb (for before/after ihram)
Ladies: feminine hygiene products, not always easy to find in Saudi
Health:
All prescription medications in original packaging, with a doctor's note if needed
Pain relievers (paracetamol) and throat lozenges
Antiseptic wipes and plasters (blister plasters especially)
Electrolyte sachets, dehydration in the heat is common, these help
A small refillable water bottle
Comfort:
Foldable compact umbrella, the midday sun in Makkah is intense
Small hand-held fan (battery-operated ones are popular)
Reusable face mask and hand sanitiser
Anti-chafe stick or petroleum jelly for long walking days
6. Tech & Power
Phone and charging cable
Power bank (check airline rules, most allow up to 100Wh in cabin baggage)
Type G travel adapter, Saudi Arabia uses the same plug type as Singapore, so your standard Singapore plugs will work in most hotels
Earphones for listening to duas, lectures, or staying in touch on flights
Saudi SIM card or roaming plan, activate this before or upon arrival
Useful apps to download before you go: Muslim Pro (prayer times, Quran, Qibla), Google Maps (offline), and a Zamzam dua guide.
7. Bags & Organisation
1 medium suitcase for checked luggage
1 cabin bag (keep all documents and essentials here)
1 small sling bag or bum bag for daily use at the Haram, keeps your hands free during Tawaf
Packing cubes, these are game-changers for staying organised
A few zip-lock bags for separating liquids
Buy in Singapore

Prescription medications

Travelling with Elderly Parents or Young Children? Pack a Little Extra
If you're travelling with elderly family members or kids, a few additional items make a big difference:
Wheelchair or walking aid, confirm with your group leader in advance whether these are available at the Haram
Compact stroller for young children (check if permitted in your package)
Extra snacks for children between meals
A small first aid kit with child-appropriate medication
Extra pairs of socks and a change of clothes for kids, accidents happen
This is one reason why Group Umrah packages are especially recommended for families, your ustad and group leader will help manage the logistics and pace of the journey so no one is left behind.
One Last Thing: What NOT to Pack
Aerosol cans or flammable items (not allowed on board)
Heavy non-breathable clothing, you will overheat
Too many shoes, two pairs maximum
Scented toiletries for use while in ihram
Valuables you don't need, keep it simple
